Ancient brooch in amethyst gold and beads dating back to the early ‘900 .

Since 3000 BC, in Egypt, South Africa and Mesopotamia, one of the most used gems for the creation of jewelry, seals and carvings. The term comes from the Greek améthystos which means “not drunk”; the Greeks believed that it was an excellent remedy against the effects of alcohol and the Romans contributed to nourish this belief. In fact, a particular behavioral label required diners to drink wine in crystal cups every time the guest approached his or her lips. He, however, limited himself to drinking pure water in an amethyst glass, whose purple reflections ‘coloured’ the water giving it the appearance of wine. In this way the guest could remain elegantly sober while his guests gave in to intoxication.
