Many do not know that the name sapphire probably comes from the Greek word σάπφειρος (sàppheiros), meaning “blue”, or from the Hebrew ספיר (sappir), meaning “the most beautiful thing”. The ancient Persians believed that the color of the sky was derived from a giant sapphire on which the Earth rested. The so-called Black Star of Queensland, the largest star sapphire of gemological quality in the world (733 karats, equivalent to 146.6 grams of weight) was discovered in Australia in the 1930s by a 12-year-old boy, Roy Spencer, in the Reward Claim mine near Anakie, Queensland. Initially mistaken by his father for a common black crystal, it was used at home as a doorstop for years. Only later, on closer examination, was it discovered to be a very valuable sapphire.
