The brilliant cut diamond solitaire ring is the ultimate pledge of love;
The history of the Solitaire as a pledge of a bond and engagement.
Although it is sometimes believed that it was the ancient Egyptians who invented the engagement ring and that the ancient Greeks adopted the tradition, the history of the engagement ring can only be traced with certainty from ancient Rome.
Pliny tells us that until the end of the first century of the Vulgar Era, engagement rings were made of simple iron, and only later did they begin to use more precious metals and to make engravings.
Starting from the second century BC, two rings were given to the bride, a gold one to be worn in public and an iron one to be worn in the house during housework. Nowadays these rings are often worn according to the tradition of the country, on the ring finger of the left or right hand: in fact once it was believed that this finger contained a vein connected with the heart (vena amoris). This superstition was popularized by Henry Swinburne’s A treatise of Spousals, or Matrimonial Contracts (1686), but the belief originated with the Roman book Noctes Atticae by Aulus Gellius
